Welded beams and columns: FAQs.
What is the difference between a welded beam (WB) and a universal beam (UB)?
Universal beams (UB) and universal columns (UC) are hot-rolled at the steel mill in fixed sizes and stock lengths. Welded beams (WB) and welded columns (WC) are made from three plates welded together, which allows deeper and heavier sections, custom dimensions and any length you need.
Can you make welded beams and columns to a custom length?
Yes. Every WB and WC is made to order at the length you specify, up to 20 m in one piece and longer with splices, so you don't pay for offcuts from stock lengths.
Do you also process UB, UC and PFC sections?
Our specialty is custom welded members, but where your package also includes hot-rolled UB, UC or PFC sections, we can cut, cope, hole and fit them with end plates, cleats and baseplates so everything arrives together.
What standards are your welded sections made to?
Welded sections are made to AS/NZS 3679.2 and welded to AS/NZS 1554.1. Our quality and welding systems are certified to AS/NZS 5131 Construction Category 2 and ISO 3834.2, and every order ships with mill certificates and inspection records.
Can you provide weld testing and NDT?
Yes. Welds are inspected to AS/NZS 1554.1, and visual, magnetic particle (MT) and ultrasonic (UT) testing can be provided to suit your project specification, including full-penetration butt welds at splices. Test reports are included in your compliance pack, and Charpy impact-tested plate can be supplied where specified.
What welding process do you use for welded beams?
Web-to-flange welds are made on our automated submerged arc (SAW) line to qualified procedures under AS/NZS 1554.1. Submerged arc welding gives deep penetration and consistent full-length welds with less distortion than manual welding.
Can you weld beams from our own cut plate?
Yes. We offer a weld-only subarc service for fabricators: send your cut flanges and webs and we assemble, submerged arc weld, straighten and inspect them into finished sections, with test reports available. Splices can be welded and UT tested on request.
How fast can you turn around welded beams?
Because we manufacture in Sydney, there's no waiting on mill rolling schedules or interstate stock. Send your schedule and required-on-site date and we'll confirm a lead time with your quote.
Can you make box sections, welded channels and plate girders?
Yes. We build custom box sections, welded channels, plate girders, tapered beams, cruciform columns and other custom welded sections from plate to your engineer's design, along with crane grillages.
Do you deliver welded beams outside Sydney?
Yes. We deliver across Sydney and by road to regional NSW, the ACT, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, with extendable trailers and permits arranged for long members.
